How To Seal Tile Grout Lines

Tile is a popular flooring material for all types of rooms, indoor and outdoor. There are many different types of tile to choose from. However, all tile floors have at least one thing in common. That is, you will need to seal the grout lines if you want your tile to remain structurally and aesthetically intact over the years. If you fail to maintain and seal your grout lines, you could run into serious problems. This article explains the process for sealing grout. It should help you decide whether or not you want to install tile in your home, or if you would prefer a lower maintenance product.

How Often You Need to Seal Grout

First of all, there is no set time period for how often you should reseal your grout. This depends on the thickness of the grout lines, what type of grout was used and where the floor is located. For instance, tile in the bathroom will need to be resealed more often than tile in an office because all the moisture will cause the grout to deteriorate quicker. That being said, it is a good idea to reseal the grout lines every two years.

Cleaning Your Floor

The project is actually very simple, except for the fact that you obviously need to remove everything off of the floor in order to get it done. The first step is to thoroughly clean your floor. This includes scrubbing away any soap scum or mold buildup within the grout lines. If you put grout sealant directly over soap scum, it will be even harder to remove because it will have a protective layer over it.

Applying the Sealant

The best way to apply grout sealant is to basically pour it onto your floor and then spread it around quickly. It is OK to spread the sealant all over the tile too. Grout sealant is clear and it will actually help to protect the tile as well. Just make sure you cover every square inch of the grout and let it dry completely before applying the next coat. Applying 2 or 3 coats is always a good idea for more protection.

After the final coat, you should allow the floor to dry a full 24 hours before using it regularly. Before you use it, you will need to use a damp rag to wipe away any haze on the surface of the tile. As you can see, this is not a very demanding project, especially if you consider that you only need to do it once every few years.
